Breath, one of the most fundamental acts of staying alive, often leaves temporal traces: cigarette smoke, winter condensation. There have been previous attempts to keep breathing, taking up some volume as a balloon, such as Pierre Manzoni's ‘Artist's Breath’.
However, to achieve the breath, I developed tools to ‘cast’ the breath in the form of a sculpture. In order to catch the breath that scatters and disappears as soon as it is exhaled, the most harmless and fastest material was investigated. At the first attempt, it was only smaller than a finger. However, after many failures, I found the appropriate conditions to cast breath and eventually succeeded in casting breath. The pressure of human breath was really weaker than expected and could not grow in size. Besides, the pressure of the liquid that was used for casting caused me a headache, some nausea, and drooling. After some of the experiments, the ‘Breathing Casting Series’ (2019-) was produced by this process.
In the series, I tried to cast the breath of mine and also others.
